Introduction
According to the National Youth Policy 2072, a person in the age group of 16 to 40 years is defined as a youth. It is the most productive age group of the population.The young people are considered to be the vehicle for political, economic and social change. According to the B.S. 2068 census, 40.35 percent comprise of youth population.Students studying in schools and colleges and youths who are out of school become victims of drug abuse. Young people consume drug substances such as Marijuana (Ganja), Hashish (Charas), Opium (afim), tablets and intravenous drugs etc. The number of drug users are increasing due to the influence of their friends/peers. There are several programs implemented to combat to control the harmful use of drugs by the Government of Nepal. However, due to the open border between the southern part of the Terai and the state of Bihar in India, the drugs are easily accessible to local youths.
A national short film has been produced and a short film has been screened in the tolls throughprojectors. The victim of drug abuse in the community causes financial, social and family problems in the community and this program has helped to reduce the distortions happening in the society.
Implementation District and Location
The project covered each ward of the Bramhapuri Rural Municipality (Ward 1-7) and Chandranagar Rural Municipality (Ward 1-7) of Sarlahi district, Madhesh Province. Majority of the drug users are from these two rural municipalities due to lack of drug related awareness programs and porous border. Approximately 35% of the project beneficiaries were women, Dalits, persons with disability, and returnee migrants.
Major Activities and Accomplishments:
Production of short movie in Maithili language and show organized in level schools, child club, and community and group discussion conducted on the harmful effects of drugs. The events were conducted on 09-15 June 2023.
Key results and Graphs
1017 adolescent girls and 987 boys oriented in the community and schools on the harmful effects of drug abuse.
